vibes

dear diary,

i was frustrated that i could not find harmony with the roomful of exuberant dancers. (or was it the people in the room were not in harmony??)

it wasn't because the floor was crowded. i enjoy crowded space now. it's challenging... when the world around me is predictable... or when the world is unpredictable in a fun way. i got the sense that people were listening to music in very very different ways. and, well, instead of flow, i felt turbulence all around, everywhere.

i stood and watched, even when it was music that i loved. i wanted to go into the crowd. but i felt an invisible force along the edge of the floor, repelling me, pushing and bumping me, keeping me out.

since i wasn't dancing, i chatted. you know what? a bunch of people felt the strangeness in the air too... maybe it wasn't just me.

sad...

Definitely not you. This has happened at a couple of milongas that I've attended. I find it most jarring when it happens at a milonga I'm normally extremely comfortable in. The music is fine, my favorite partners are there - but the floor just seems "bumpy." Sometimes the number of new/out-of-town dancers who maybe aren't as familiar with the venue is a little higher than usual. Sometimes dancers who are normally the "glue" of the milonga - the ones that soothe and cheer everyone else - are out of sorts for some reason. Unfortunately it can kind of build or snowball because one rough tanda makes you a little wary during the next one, which makes that one a little rougher too. On those nights I tend to visit and chat a little more, and dance a little less.
